CEDD

The Vaioni Carrier Ethernet Demarcation Device or also known as CEDD is a Next Generation switch based CPE manufactured by Ciena, which delivers advanced and feature rich Carrier Ethernet functionality to MEF standard. CEDD is the device that sites local to you the customer. Ciena is one of the global leaders in the manufacturing of Carrier Ethernet hardware and devices. The top global Telco Carriers and ISP’s use Ciena as the supplier of choice in the delivery of Carrier Ethernet hardware to meet the demands of MEF standards.

Many non-specialist Ethernet ISP’s deliver Ethernet services via a local router, generally a Cisco or Juniper router. This is ok, but is an older and less effective technology in managing an Ethernet Service. Businesses and way we do business online today there is far more demand from the internet service and with the introduction of cloud services, the customer needs to better manage how services run over the internet connection. Running online applications at their optimal level and sustaining a healthy and high performance internet service is critical. Router based managed services are slower and do not offer the level of control, SLA on jitter, latency and performance or compliancy that Carrier Ethernet delivers such as QoS, QinQ, advanced diagnostics and monitoring such as TWAMP or OAM. Most routers deployed do not offer any of these features or have the ability to manage the maximum bandwidth bought by the customer, especially when you get to the higher bandwidths.

Here is a comparison table of features/advantages:

Ciena Carrier Ethernet Demarcation Device

Traditional and older router Device

True wire-speed performance

Limited to the router capacity, even though it may have a 100mb/1Gb ethernet port

True QoS MEF 14 compliancy

Traditional “best endeavours” QoS profiling to no MEF standard

QinQ within QinQ

No further QinQ enabled

All routing done at the ISP core to maintain optimal performance

Most routing done locally increasing latency and decreasing performance.

True MEF complaint line monitoring for latency, jitter and performance (OAM)

Non-MEF complaint line monitoring which is basic

MEF compliant last mile line tolerance and testing for advanced diagnostics

No last mile line tolerance or testing

Standard 1Gb termination

Standard 100mb termination

G.8032 Ethernet Ring Protection – failover in sub-50ms

Varies, but does not achieve sub-50ms.
